Throughout this year, the children will regularly be asked to use what they have learned in their curriculum lessons to answer a Big Question. They will look at sources and have gained information in order to answer these questions and fully justify them.


Autumn 1:  Ancient Greeks


Autumn 1: World War One 

In this topic, we will learn about the experiences of a soldier during the First World War and research trench life and the horrific conditions in which the soldiers served and lived. We learn about why the War broke out and discuss which reason is the most important reason and why and discuss whether war could have been prevented. We also look at the geographical locations of the War, focussing on the Western Front, which aids the children in their knowledge of the European  countries. Additionally, we will look at the life of Walter Tull and why he is an important historical figure.


Spring 1: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis.

As part of this topic, the children will look in depth at Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tsunamis, what they are and what causes them. They will understand the difference between a natural disaster and a man-made one and just how dangerous the earth can be. 


Spring 2: Paris

This topic is very much based around our Year 6 trip to Paris. The trip to Paris is a fantastic opportunity for the children to experience the sights, smells, sounds and culture of a major world capital as well as allowing them to grow in their own confidence and providing a lifetime of memories. The trip also has links to our previous topic of War as the children will be visiting Vimy Ridge, a Canadian National Memorial based in the final resting places of thousands of soldiers. This experience will allow the children to experience the cramped conditions of the trenches and the unexpectedly close proximity of the opposing sides' trenches. 

Within the classroom, we focus very much on the geography of Paris as well as locating historical monuments and landmarks on a map. We also look at the route we will be taking on our trip and ask the children to create their own maps of this. We will compare the city of Paris to two to other major world cities in order to give the children a broader knowledge of differing world cities in terms of its human geography. 

We will also look at the life of Walter Tull and he overcame adversity to become the first black officer to lead white British soldiers into battle as whilst we are in Paris, we will visit his memorial.


Summer 1: Children of War

As part of this topic, the children will continue to build on their knowledge of War, focussing on the effect of WW2 on children. They will look at the life of an Evacuee in Britain and then look further afield at how the war affected children in other countries. They will focus particularly on Anne Frank and her experiences.


Summer 2: Guardians of the Earth

During this topic, the children will learn about how their actions, and the actions of others, are causing damage to the world in which we live. They will look at the effects of plastic pollution, destruction of the rainforests and the melting of the ice caps (they will have an understanding of icebergs from our Titanic topic in Autumn 1) and the effects all of these have on the animals who live in those habitats. They will then think about what they can do to help the environment, and the earth on which we live, for the rest of the generations to come.
